“Whatever is disagreeable to yourself do not do unto others.”

Can you spot the similarities? That’s right all of them agreed on one thing. Do not do to others what you don’t want them to do to you. Regarded as the golden rule in life and in all humanity, would this be also applicable as a golden rule in business undertakings? For me, the answer is a straightforward yes.

How do you treat your clients or customers? Are you treating them like you treat yourself? If you want to gain profit in your business, make sure that your clients and customers receive profit or a benefit from you – that is in the form of satisfaction on your products or services. If your customers are happily satisfied with your products, then they will surely patronize your products. Moreover, happy customers will always speak the greatness of your products to other people, thereby making these delighted customers your own marketers. The satisfaction of your clients and customers is the key to your sales and profit success. Satisfaction for your customers and in return, profit for your business – this is the ethic of reciprocity. You already know what will happen to your business if your clients and customers will become dissatisfied on your services and products.

Now imagine how you treat your employees? Are you treating them the way do you want them to treat you? Are you paying them the right wages and benefits? Do you care for their health, self development and future living? Do you promote your employees in the spirit of honesty and integrity? If your answers to these questions are true, then congratulations, expect that your employees will work for the amount you are paying them; will be in high morale to do work effectively and efficiently; and in return will also promote you and your company in the spirit of honesty and integrity. Employees are the most important assets and resources an entity could have. They are more than machines and must be safeguarded physically, mentally and emotionally. And the ethic of reciprocity is… a good living for employees and a good business flow and production for your business company. And oh! You know how horrible are the consequences if your employees are not well compensated and safeguarded, are exposed to dishonesty and disrespectful environment, and are obviously in a low morale status. Internal business illnesses are the most common causes of sudden business downfall.

Finally, let us not forget our government and our environment. Simply, pay your taxes and licenses in due date and in due amounts and expect good night sleep every night because you will be safe from future tax deficiency assessments the government will impose you for being a tax evader. We shall not also do anything that will hurt our mother nature. Manufacturers, mining and power companies are example of companies which largely affect our environment. Apparently, how would a mining company will continue into business if it already ruined our soils and mountains? How would the wood industry proceed into business if it already abused our forests? Can the fishing industry prosper if it already destroys our seas? The golden rule is simple – “Do not do to others what you don’t want them to do to you.
