Meeting is an essential activity that must be regularly conducted in an organization. Whatever and whoever are involved – business owners, employees or customer… meetings should be done effectively. But how can we do that? By assembling people together and telling them what to do? And then by making these people follow our desires and commands, we can already consider that we had an effective meeting? No, we cannot absolutely consider that as a successful meeting. Rather, we may call that an effective announcement or an accomplished instruction. Managers and leaders are the ones who control meetings in an organization. For this reason, they should realize one important thing – the essence of a meeting.

What is the essence of having a meeting? Is it the beauty of bringing together the physical presence of several persons? It’s not all that. A meeting should not only a meeting of human bodies but more importantly an assembly of thoughts, emotions and wills. Some managers and leaders don’t realize these very important views. They reckon a meeting as an activity to convey their desires but not hear the wishes of others. They use meetings just to express their selves but never mind listening. They utilize meetings to give instructions but ignore suggestions. Those are not meeting! Their thoughts, decisions and wills are not meeting!

The scenario of a real meeting is one where all the persons attending in that gathering have their voices heard by everyone. It is where the majority of thoughts and wills of attendees prevail. In other words, everybody meet not only in physical presence but also in thoughts and decisions.

In assemblies, a manager or a leader should see to it that he leads the meeting by allowing and encouraging everyone to express their ideas, comments and suggestions. He should also possess the right wisdom and humility to connect with the human side of the persons in that gathering. Finally, he must assure that the ideas, decisions and actions that will reign are the ones that meet the wills of, if not all the people, the best of people.

Now, the efficacy of a meeting doesn’t only lies with the one who preside it. Everyone should participate! Have you ever attended a meeting, let us say an office meeting or a social meeting? Have you tried to not talk or participate? What happen when the decision you want to happen is not the one which prevail? Isn’t it regrettable that you have not spoken? The truth is… you have wasted your attendance. You are physically present but verbally, expressively and ideally absent. You have met them bodily, but did not meet them mentally, emotionally and willfully.

Now what is the essence of a true meeting? Do you permit your self to hold or to be in a non-essential meeting? Tell me.
