Benefits of short breaks during working hours
As you go on to chase a deadline, you’ve already forgotten your meals and ignored to take some short breaks. A heroic act is what lingers in your mind. Besides, this is what your boss wants. Because your boss is a workaholic, he wants to see you also in his shadow. The lack of strategic planning and quality control has caused all of these cramming office scenarios. But there is no turning back and you need to accomplish your challenging job. When you look at your face in the mirror, you’ve noticed two big, dark and puffy bags under your eyes. Then you have called your fairy god mother and wish to get rid of them. But there is no fairy tale on this. What you need is a break. – a series of short breaks for relaxation and rejuvenation.
Taking short breaks recuperates your brain, eyes and your body. It also reboots your thoughts and emotions. Your body and brain have been exhausted for over working and they need to be rejuvenated to work again properly. Even when you push your self to the limit to finish a task, it will only result to fatigue and consequently will result to a failure to get that task done. Also, there are times that our body can still function but our eyes cannot do their job anymore. In this case, our eyes should regain freshness.
A two minute short breaks every hour can help us protect our body from exhaustion and over fatigue. These short breaks can also preserve the quality of our works. Just compare two tasks performed by an exhausted worker and an invigorated worker. Whose task would you think to be in a quality form?
The encouragement of short breaks in a workplace will actually benefit both employees and their employer. Employees will be reassured of their health. It will also boost their motivation and productivity. On the part of employers, they can be certain that the tasks they assign to their workers will be in good quality. Encouraging short-breaks will also make employees feel that their boss cares and is listening to their needs including the needs of their boy – their health and safety. Further, the law on many countries also requires companies that employees should be given short-breaks between working hours for their protection. Demoralization of employees exists when employers discourage such privilege for their employees. This is the time that employee turnover increases and productivity decreases.
