Employee recognition in an organization

When we hear of employee recognition, we think of merit, acknowledgment, gratitude, appreciation, and some thanks for the job well-done by an employee. Employee recognition may be in the forms of awards, employee merits, promotions and monetary incentives. However, a simple saying of thanks and round of applause can also become a good form of recognition that may boost the morale of a certain worker. The importance of recognizing your personnel is as important as making them productive and achieving organizational goals. That’s why, a failure to properly recognize your best assets (human resources), may result to a total organizational disaster.

The responsibility of employers and managers to recognize employees does not only extend to their ability to quickly judge people – whether these people are worthy of acknowledgement or not. Their obligations should also stretch to their abilities to rightfully diagnose and deeply monitor their personnel for their hidden acts that help the organization. This involves reliable employee performance review and evaluation. Employees are humans. Hence, managers should take extra care on their morale and emotions. This is why employee recognition should always be preceded by a careful employee assessment. One wrong recognition of an undeserving employee can destroy the morale of other employees; and one failure to recognize a worthy employee can raze his self-esteem and can also result to the destruction of the confidence of his co-workers.

Finally, employee recognition should still not just stop from acknowledgment and evaluation of employees. Employers should also be happy to see their laborers accomplish their jobs well. Therefore, they should also have the initiative to guide these workers to do their jobs effectively and efficiently. To conclude everything, managers and employers should always observe fair employee recognition which is ensured by proper employee evaluation and maintained by constant employee direction. This should be applied to all the members of the organization and not just to selected people. Remember that everyone can contribute and affect the whole organization – positively or negatively.

  1. Most companies Ive seen really don't practise what they preach team building, mission statements, vision statements I have seen it all. When it comes down to it ,most companies just want more no matter what kind of job your doing. Benefits and bonuses are great but who your manager is makes a big difference. I haven't seen alot of companies let their employees rate their managers.

  2. I agree that employee recognition is extremely important. A manager cannot assume that their employees are satisfied with just having a job to go to everyday. Most employees still want to feel appreciated and valued. While monetary compensation is preferable to most, just sincerely thanking employees or pointing out good work can go a long way.

  3. A main component in maintaining a relevant reward program is communication. Employees will understand recognition and incentive programs better and feel reassured when they are openly discussed both at the inception and throughout the reward program.

    This is quite true. In the various jobs that I've worked in through the years, even a simple word of appreciation would do wonders for my morale and make me work with that much more genuine sincerity. I think many employers don't realize this and just how much more productive their employees could be with only a few kind words or gestures of encouragement.

    You are right Jean. This little things although seems to be tiny bits of costs and efforts on the part of employers, have great impacts on employees. They also contribute substantial productivity in an organization.

  10. Despite the model you come up with, if you tell your employees what is expected of them, give them the resources to do it and recognize a job well done, you will be well on your way to providing a great working environment for your staff.

  17. Even in this instance, being popular had its advantages. Note, I was a manager, and couldn't be nominated, so this is not sour grapes for having been in the loser catagory.
