First of all, is money really the root of all evil? If you’re answer is yes, then you are in a big trouble. Money alone is not the root of all evil, it is the “love of money” that is the root of all evil. For over the years, the notion “money is the root of all evil’ become one of the greatest misconceptions the world has. Why misconception? Let us find why.
The phrase was derived from the First Epistle of Apostle Paul to Timothy in the New Testament of the Holy Bible.
People who want to get rich fall into temptation and a trap and into many foolish and harmful desires that plunge men into ruin and destruction. For the love of money is a root of all kinds of evil. Some people, eager for money, have wandered from the faith and pierced themselves with many grieves.– 1Timothy 6:9-10
It is clear that the Bible says… it is the love of money which is the root of all kinds of evil. The whole passage teaches godliness, righteousness, love, faith, contentment and richness in good deeds. It guides us to keep away from becoming slaves and worshippers of money and other earthly things which will ultimately harm our lives and souls. But though God discourages us to love money, He doesn’t want us to live in poverty. He wants us to stay faithful, loving and disciplined so we may be able to receive all the blessings that God Himself wants to deliver to us.
Honor the LORD with your possessions, And with the firstfruits of all your increase; So your barns will be filled with plenty, And your vats will overflow with new wine. –Proverbs 3:9-10
“Therefore do not worry, saying, ‘What shall we eat?’ or ‘What shall we drink?’ or ‘What shall we wear?’ For after all these things the Gentiles seek. For your heavenly Father knows that you need all these things. But seek first the kingdom of God and His righteousness, and all these things shall be added to you. — Matthew 6:31-33
Below is a reason why our Lord wants to stop us from loving money:
“No one can serve two masters. Either he will hate the one and love the other, or he will be devoted to the one and despise the other. You cannot serve both God and Money. — Matthew 6:24
In other words, if we become slaves of money, we cannot serve God. And if we cannot serve God, we cannot have His blessings and glory.
Once again money alone is not the root of all evils; it is the love of money. Let us be wise to know the truth by keeping the true words of the Lord. Let’s become cautious on the spread of any false doctrines because they may lead us to spiritual disaster. Let us embrace God’s words completely – no more no less as what the Bible says.
Brothers, I have applied all this to Apollos and myself for your benefit, so that you may learn from us not to go beyond what is written. Then you will stop boasting about one person at the expense of another. — 1Corinthians 4:6
Now, because God is truth, He is also verifiable – so that we may live not just by faith but also by the truth. And to testify the veracity of the His Words, we shall prove that love of money is really the root of all evil. Let’s verify that with the following deadly sins and evils.
1. Pride. A rich person becomes so proud, because he thinks money makes him greater than anyone.
2. Envy. People who love money envy their neighbors who are richer than them.
3. Lust. Women work as prostitutes and spread lust to men because of their love and desperate need of money.
4. Wrath. If you love your millions and you’ll lose it – you’ll get so mad.
5. Sloth. A person who loves money is busy in financial activities, but inactive in spiritual activities.
6. Gluttony. If you love money, you boast it, and you show it through extravagant parties and fests.
7. Greed. People who love money, crave for money.
8. Lie. Tax evaders commit tax evasion because of their love on money.
Now is the love and worship of money the root of all evil? The Lord taught it, and I believe it. How about you? What’s your answer? And are you a slave of the bucks inside your pocket? I hope not…
