How to become popular? Ignore popularity.

Almost everyday, I look up excitedly on the popularity report of this blog. It seems like I can’t wait my blog to see there in the top popular blog list. It takes me five minutes each day to relieve my thirst on that report. Sometimes, I find myself stuck in front of my computer starring at my popularity report. And the worst happens when I get disappointed with my rankings. What an impatient blogger, isn’t it? But after those disappointments, I realized I was wasting my time in front of that report. I asked myself, what if I only check my popularity once every month? How about once every three months? If I consume 5 minutes per day, then I can save 145 minutes or almost 2 and a half hour a month. This is already enough to write and publish 1 to 2 good articles that will increase my popularity.
Aside from money, fame is one thing that people are craving for. Money and fame are almost a twin dream for most of us. Who don’t want to be recognized? Who don’t want to be a star? Of course most of us want to be recognized and be stars. But wait! Spiderman, Superman and other great heroes hide their identity. They don’t want to be recognized. These super persons are great but why they don’t want fame and recognition? Perhaps they just want their jobs to be recognized but not their identities. They don’t want their identities to be exposed for security purposes of their family or any person who are connected to them. For me, these great persons are teaching us a lesson – ignore popularity. Yes ignore popularity. Just do great and let popularity come after you. Let’s just do our jobs, do them greatly, and share or teach them generously to other people.
I am not contradicting marketing and promotion by telling people to hide and let the popularity chase you. What I’m trying to point is, let us focus on what we do and not on the recognition or fame that we can get. Marketing is not just product promotion, it’s all about creating a quality product that will guarantee consumers’ satisfaction. A product or a service, although highly promoted, if will not satisfy consumers, will just become a waste. On the other hand, a product or a service which is in great quality, although not really popular at the start, will have a big change to become famous as a great product through the word of mouth of satisfied customers.
I will not be making this article very long. I hope you got the point. How to become popular? Ignore popularity and just do what is great. Remember Spiderman and Superman, they hate popularity but yet they are very popular. They are so popular because they just do what is “great”.

I am trying to find a business that will become popular or is popular for at least a year or more.
Hi Rugby,
Finding a business shall not be directed to what is popular. It should be directed to what is your passion. Ask your self, what business do you become so enthusiastic?
Good article.
You brought up a good point here – “Marketing is not just product promotion”. Marketing is about building relationship and understand customers.

Hi Vic,
Besides wasting time checking your reports it also can be counterproductive if one report its not in your favor and may even lower your drive and make you do even less effort that will make your stats look even worst. The best its to focus on the quality of the product or articles your offering.
Luis
