Have you ever asked yourself how you will act in front of your customers or in front of your employees? How about how you will interact with your online visitors and customers? If you are not sure how you will present your self in front of these people, then you got to read and reflect on this piece of wisdom from the Bible:
“Behold, I send you forth as sheep in the midst of wolves: be ye therefore wise as serpents, and harmless as doves. Matthew 10:16”
Sometimes we see ourselves in a midst of two conflicting decisions – to be soft to show gentleness or to be hard to show strength and power. The conflicting issue may be like this: you want to show you’re power and strength to other people but you are afraid that this kind of personality may intimidate them and drive them away. On the other hand, if you will show gentleness, people may become abusive of the soft personality you will show to them.
If you are a business owner, a soft personality, may attract a decent number of customers. The drawback is, some customers may take advantage of your soft personality and may become abusive in actions like delaying payment of debts and asking too much discounts that may cause your business to fall down. On the other hand, if will become strict to your customers, they might be intimidated and go to the path of your competitors.
In case of employers, managers and leaders, showing soft personality to your subordinates may cause harmony inside your group or organization. But this may only become reality in the beginning. After a while, some or the majority of your followers may also abuse your too kind personality. Oppositely, if you will become strict and tight to your people, the tendency is they might lose inspiration and perhaps morale.
Online entrepreneurs may also face these kinds of problems. Like for example the bloggers or publishers, they will find it hard to predict what their readers or audience want to expect on their websites or blogs – modest sites or harsh sites?
Those are the issues that we consider. But the Bible is clear, let us walk, talk and act like a dove, but think like a serpent. A dove is a symbol of modesty and being a harmless person, while a serpent is a symbol of intelligence and cleverness. Those, the Bible guides us to be gentle and harmless to our customers, employees, creditors, debtors, online visitors and other people we face everyday. Being like a dove is being gentle and harmless not only in action but also in words. As the Bible tells us to be gentle in action and in words, it also wants us to have intelligent minds. God wants us not to hurt people by teaching us to be gentle in actions and in words. Also, He doesn’t want us to let our selves be harmed by other people by teaching us to be clever, alert and wise.
So next time, when we face our customers, clients, employees, co-workers, subordinates and other people around us, let’s talk, act and walk like a gentle dove but think, plan and analyze like a serpent.
